Breeding work les Baudets du breuil

Breeding work

Since 2007, each mare is serviced every two years so mares have at most one foal every two years.

The permanence of the female herd and the well established hierarchy amongst them lends to harmony within the group.

The donkeys live outside all year around. There is access to shelter available.

They are regulary monitored, have vermifuge and their parasits killed. They eat lots of grass, meadow and alfalfa’s grass anytime. They also eats cereals and vitamins.

The coverings follow the “prairing scheme” (or “plan d’accouplement” in french). It takes place at the Breuil with our registred stallion in “natural and freedom intercourses” and also at the “Asinerie Nationale” at Dampierre on Boutonne or with males from others breeders.

During pregnancy, mares have regular scans and checks by vets.

The futur mother is separated from the herd before giving birth. The breeder is used to spend her nights and days next to the mare. As soon as the foal first month comes, he and his mare would join the herd.
